It can be quiet tedious to find one that is both UV resistant and will not make your art crack or fade. Which is why I recommend these 15 best sealers.

15 Best Sealers for Acrylic Paint

Indeed, there exists a diverse range of sealants or as others would like to call them” sealers” that can be applied to various surfaces. To simplify matters, I’ll categorize these sealants based on the specific surfaces they are best suited for.

1) Winsor & Newton Professional Acrylic Medium, Gloss UV Varnish( Best for Ceramics, Models, Canvases)

Just like their acrylic paints that come in two ranges( Winsor & Newton Professional acrylic paints & Winsor & Newton Galeria Acrylic Paint Set), the sealers also come in 2 variations( the Winsor & Newton Professional sealer and Winsor & Newton Galeria Acrylic Gloss Varnish).

The Winsor & Newton Professional Acrylic Sealer is often recommended for professionals over students due to its advanced features and potentially higher cost. If you are not a fan of matte or satin finish, choosing this gloss sealer gives your surfaces a vibrant glossy shine, makes colors pop and adds dimension. Unlike matte sealers, it provides that shine that brings out textures, giving your art or project a lively and captivating visual appeal.

No doubt, the Winsor & Newton Professional Acrylic sealer is a top performer for also its versatility. It allows mixing with different sheen finishes, enabling the creation of a diverse range of final effects on surfaces such as; Ceramics, Models, or Canvases.

Thankfully, the brand is well known and this has helped it sell like crazy on Amazon. What I also love is that it can easily be removed using any varnish remover in case you’d want to make some adjustments. Why did I place it number one? Well, it delivers and comes in all sizes. However, I recommend a 450ml size for beginners . Just make sure your art has fully dried before you apply this varnish.

Expert View: If you have been painting for a long time, you require a more specialized and durable sealer to match the quality and longevity of your work. This sealer might have a steeper price point, making it more suitable for you who has invested in your artistic career and demand top-tier results. Students, on the other hand, might benefit from Winsor & Newton Galeria Acrylic Gloss Varnish, a more affordable option.

2) Winsor & Newton Galeria Acrylic Gloss Varnish( Best for  Metal, Plastic, Model and Canva)

Unlike Winsor & Newton Professional Gloss sealer, the Winsor & Newton Galeria Acrylic Gloss Varnish is recommended for students and is very affordable if you ask me. For under 15 bucks, you snag yourself a sealer that’s not only budget-friendly but also kicks UV rays and dust to the curb, guarding your artwork. Plus, it throws in a slick, glossy finish for that extra oomph. Best part-You can mix it with Galeria Matte Varnish to achieve the finish variation you want.

Now, I like to be honest in all my reviews. My experience with this sealer was a bit of a long haul. On my large Canva painting, it took several layers to achieve the coverage I was satisfied with. I found myself applying it over four times to achieve a clean canvas. Personally, this didn’t worry me much since I used other colors for layering.

So if your canvas isn’t entirely clean, be prepared to apply around 4 to 5 layers for the best results. Other than that, I do not see any cons with this one. Such a great product for Metal, Plastic, Model and Canva surfaces.

3) Liquitex Professional Gloss Varnish, 237ml (8-oz ( Best for Multi- Surfaces)

Is there any artist who has never tried liquitex acrylic paints? I highly doubt it. Liquitex is a power- house that has been in the market since 1955. Not to over hype this brand but if you have ever tried their acrylic paints, you know that they are among the best ( in terms of quality, durability and ease of use) that we currently have in the industry. If you haven’t tried their acrylic paints, I recommend you start with Liquitex BASICS Acrylic Paint Set, 12 x 118ml (4-oz) Tube Paint Set.

Now, the Liquitex Professional Gloss Varnish is an attention catcher because it comes with a 8-oz / 237ml bottle of medium and gives a glossy finish. However, if you want a matte finish you can check out the Liquitex BASICS Matte Varnish. Even though this sealer can be used on a variety of surfaces, I recommend using it on Canva.

Speaking from my own experience, using this sealer was a breeze of fresh air to say the least. I noticed there was no strong odor, and cleaning the brush afterward was easy-peasy. I applied it with a light touch, ensuring not to overdo it. After giving it a patient 2 days to dry, I finally lightly sanded it with a fine-grade paper and wiped it down thoroughly.

I did apply a second coat which took about a good 48 hours to fully dry and set. One thing’s for sure, I learned not to rush the process – it’s all about letting it dry at its own pace. So, if you’re looking for a varnish that’s hassle-free and delivers superb results, the Liquitex Professional Gloss Varnish should be on your list to try. Its easy application, lack of strong odors, and brush clean-up simplicity make it a joy to work with.

4) Mod Podge CS11304 Waterbase Sealer, Glue and Finish, Matte ( Best for Wood, Paper, Plastic, Acrylic)

Liquid sealers may not be your cup of tea. If you want an aerosol spray, Mod Podge CS11302 Waterbase Sealer, Glue and Finish( Matte) is what you should definitely get. Unlike other sealers that can take even up-to 48 hours to dry up, this sealer will approximately dry in 15-20 minutes.

I bought this sealer for my nieces and they loved it. The clean-up after painting is such a huge blessing, especially when kids are involved. My nieces used this matte sealer on their wood paintings during our outdoor camping. However, it can be used on, paper, plastic, and acrylic Canva painting with so much ease . Just make sure your acrylic paint has completely dried before you apply this sealer.

I found out that applying with either a brush or sponge applicator is a lot easier, and the bonus is that it minimizes tackiness. If you’re considering it for frequent use, go for the gallon size( 128 oz) instead of smaller bottles – it’s a savvy cost-saving move. Also, if you run an art classroom, I totally vouch for it –It’s the ultimate multitasker, serving as a sealer, glue, and finish, all rolled into one.

By the way, Mod Podge has a lot of sealers for almost all surfaces. If you want a Mod Podge sealer for metal or Rubber , check out these 3 Top Mod Podge Sealers .

These options are available in both 1oz and 4oz sizes for your convenience.

Application is pretty straightforward; just apply the finisher using methods such as a sponge, cloth, wool, spray gun, or brush, and allow it to dry. 6) Sargent Art 22-8808 16-Ounce Acrylic Gloss and Varnish For Interior Use

Another good sealer I highly recommend is Sargent acrylic gloss and varnish. I really like how easily it spreads, which makes it great for using many times.

When I thinned it by about 10% with something to help it flow better, I sprayed it on with a special airbrush. It worked really well, and I could put on a full, wet coat without any drips or sags. Once it dried, it looked really smooth and shiny, like glass. It also stayed clear, just like water. My experience with it was great. It’s a good choice to make your art look perfect and clear.

10) Plaid Clear Acrylic Sealer Aerosol Spray, 6 Ounce (Pack of 1), Matte ( Best for Wood)

So, I got my hands on the Plaid Clear Acrylic Sealer Aerosol Spray in Matte, 6 ounces per can, and here’s what I think. First off, this matte sealer gives Super sleek finishing. Perfect for toning down the shine without making things dull. One can goes a surprisingly long way – I managed to cover a decent-sized project and still had some left. No lie, though, you have to shake that can like you mean it to get a consistent spray.

And speaking of spray, it comes out pretty even, no crazy splatters. The big deal here is how it seals the deal (pun intended). I tested it on various surfaces – paper, wood, even a small metal piece – and it held up like a champ. No yellowing or weird texture changes, which is a win. So if you’re after a solid matte sealer that’s versatile and won’t let your crafts down, this Plaid one gets a thumbs up from me. It also comes in a glossy finish, if you prefer that to matte version.

How Do You Seal Water-Based Acrylic Paint?

Sealing water-based acrylic paint is essential to protect your artwork and ensure its longevity. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Wait for Complete Drying: Before sealing, make sure your acrylic paint is completely dry. This typically takes around30 minutes to 24 hours, but it’s best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on drying time.
  • Choose Your Sealant: Opt for a clear sealant specifically designed for acrylic paints. You can find acrylic varnishes in matte, satin, and glossy finishes.
  • Prepare Your Workspace: Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes. Lay your painting flat on a clean surface.
  • Test in an Inconspicuous Area: Before applying the sealant to your entire artwork, do a test spray or brush in an inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn’t react negatively with the paint.
  • Apply Thin Coats: Apply thin, even coats of the acrylic varnish. You can use a brush or an aerosol spray, depending on your preference. Start with a light coat and let it dry before applying subsequent coats.
  • Allow Drying Time: Follow the drying time recommended by the varnish manufacturer between each coat. This is usually around 15-20 minutes.
  • Watch for Bubbles or Runs: Be cautious to avoid applying too much varnish at once, as it can lead to bubbles or runs on your artwork.
  • Vertical Brush Strokes: If you’re using a brush-on varnish, apply it in vertical brush strokes to minimize visible brush lines.
  • Keep Dust Away: While the varnish is drying, try to keep your workspace as dust-free as possible to prevent particles from sticking to the wet surface.
  • Final Coat: Once you’re satisfied with the coverage, let your artwork dry completely. Depending on the brand, this might take a day or two.

Remember, sealing your acrylic painting not only protects it but also enhances its appearance.
